Vision Boards – Turning Visions Into Reality

Let me preface this by saying that I have a VERY short attention span.  In fact, my attention span is SO short that on a DAILY basis I find myself walking into the pantry and standing there for a few seconds trying to figure out why I’m there before realizing with great embarrassment for myself that where I actually wanted to be was the PANTRY to grab cereal for the kid’s breakfast! Oh, COME ON!

Why am I sharing this with you?

I’m sharing this with you because in today’s day and age, it’s easy to get distracted.  There are so many things to be reaching for and thinking about at any given moment.  From what books to read for leisure, what book to read for career growth, what new show to watch, what school to send the kids to, what types of foods I should be eating and feeding my children, what I want my house to look like, where to invest my money, what’s going to make my skin smooth, what’s the best workout for me to stay fit, to….AHHHHH….

You get the picture.

So many choices.  So many options.  The sky’s the limit!  Yet, how do we narrow things down?  How do we stay focused?

Focus is something I struggle with.  Daily and sometimes hourly I lose my train of thought and find myself completely distracted with noise coming in from both the outside world as well as my own limitless ideas of what I should be doing.  So, how do I combat the constant distractions that rip through my thoughts on a regular basis?

Aside from making lists and outlining my goals, I stay on track with a Vision Board.  A vision board, or “focus board” is the spot that I display visual representations and reminders of what I am trying to achieve.

Depending on what is going on in a given year, I try to have 1 very long term dream or goal, 1 semi- achievable goal that can be accomplished within a year, and then some fitness, health and/or spiritual goals. For me these are visual reminders of who I want to be, who I want to become and most of all inspiration.  Now, keep in mind, what inspires me may not inspire you.  What motivates me may not motivate you.  I’ve seen all types of vision boards from all kinds of people. To get you started, here are some ideas:

  • Inspirational quotes or affirmations – print them, cut them, write them, paint them and post them on your vision board.
  • Vacation homes or travel destination pictures
  • Magazine articles, clippings, pictures – things that you pull inspiration from
  • Pictures of role models or people you may aspire to be
  • A home or business you may be saving to buy
  • An award you are working to achieve

If you want to increase your success rate, consider throwing a vision board party with some friends.  Get together one evening or afternoon.  Share your goals and spend the time getting your vision boards up and running for the first time.

Check out our recent podcast to hear more about our vision boards and why we like them so much!

My hairdresser could not believe how much new growth there was on my head!! In fact, I couldn’t believe it myself. A girlfriend told me about this stuff and her hair was a regrowing like crazy. I swear I thought she had bangs, her hair looked amazing! So, of course, I bought it and started using it each morning and night.  A few weeks later it was noticeably WORKING! Taking Control – Mind Control 101

Mind-Control is defined as: Subverting by means of psychological tactics an individual’s control of his or her mind (thinking, behavior, emotions, or decisions). One acknowledged technique to facilitate this is hypnosisSubvert is defined as to overthrow, destroy or undermine.

Taking control of ones mind sounds complicated and something out of a sci-fi novel, but I’m here to break it down and tell you how simple and IMPORTANT it really is for daily success. I’ll start with a scenario below.

Congratulations on the promotion!  These words rang in my ears for weeks as the news travelled across my organization.  I had just been through a grueling three month interview process and I knew there were other qualified candidates in the running as well.

THEN IN AN INSTANT

Despite my true excitement, qualifications and longing for this position, I found myself feeling overwhelmed, unsure of myself and unqualified. There was a subtle voice in my mind whispering things like, “They must have made a mistake and meant to choose someone else” or  “What if I can’t lift this team up and produce results”  or even worse yet, “Maybe I should quit before I really screw up someone else’s life”.  – Sounds terrible, right?  I would never talk to someone like that so why on earth would I talk to myself that way?

Our subconscious is the culprit for this mind game and it’s our job to shut it down.  I’ve outlined three simple steps below to help you gain control of your mind.

#1 CHECK UP FROM THE NECK UP

Our subconscious drives doubt and most of the time it starts with quiet thoughts such as “I’m in over my head”, “I’m not good enough”, “I’m not capable”.  As these thoughts arise, this is where mind-control becomes our greatest tool – and fear not, the Jedi force is within us all.

Success is learning to drive PAST the STINKING THINKING and through to a more powerful YOU.   Even Zig Ziglar recognized this and shared this with others often.

“We all need a daily check up from the neck up to avoid stinkin ‘thinkin’ …” – Zig Zilar

HA!  Check up from the neck up – this thought in itself should stop you in your tracks and break the negativity.  Another one you may like, all though not sure it’s what Ice Cube had in mind is “Check yourself before you wreck yourself”

Both of these concepts can serve as daily reminders to make a purposeful check into our thoughts and take back control of our minds.

#2 SPIN IT POSITIVE

Once we kill the stinking thinking, it’s time to move to the next step in mind control.

Try this exercise, Identify where the thought is stemming from and then spin the thought into something positive.  HINT:  9 times out of 10 the negative thought is driven from fear.

For example, let’s take the thought that’s crept up for me many times.   “I’m in over my head.”  First I identify the fear associated with this thought and I take a moment to soak that in.  I am scared.  I am scared that I’m in over my head and won’t be able to dig myself out of this project.  I am scared that if I can’t dig myself out of the project that I’ll miss my deadline and ultimately fail.  Now that I’ve identified the fear, I can use my Jedi magic to spin the negative into a positive.  I force my thoughts through writing them, thinking them and even saying them out loud.

I. AM. CAPABLE.  I will NOT in to give in to my fear. I’ve got this.  I’ve been here before and I like a good challenge. I’m resilient, resourceful and I’ll rock this.

#3 DAY DREAM THE GOOD DREAM

The last step in mind control is envisioning the success and what it will look like.

Let’s pretend you are supposed to give a presentation next week.  You’ve already checked in with yourself and have identified that you are scared your message may not go over well and your audience may not agree with the concepts you are presenting.  Aside from properly preparing your talk track and visuals, take some time to dream about what success will look like when you knock it out of the park.  Get as detailed as you would like, sometimes you may want to dream about what you will be wearing, the excitement in the room when you give your presentation, the way your audience hangs on to each and every word coming out of your mouth and the way they engage with you during and after the presentation.

Take it even a step further and identify what success will look like for you when this presentation goes well.  Maybe it means a nice deal that will close out your year, or an innovative break though that will change the way others do business.  Whatever success means to you and for this presentation, THAT’S the piece that you should identify and day dream about.

NOTE: I’m not saying you shouldn’t properly prepare, that’s important. What I am saying is that in addition to preparation, the way to control your mind in a positive way is to take it a step further and spend some time envisioning success and paint the picture of what that looks like and means to you.

There are many great books and leaders that have written about this topic.  Mel Robbins dives into this topic in  5 Second Rule as well as her TED talks.  Emee Vide Estacio goes into great detail and guidance in her book The PAME Code.  Rhonda Byrne wrote The Secret which really takes the benefits of positive thinking to a new level.  There are so many resources out there that expand on this and multiple schools of thought if you’d like to dive deeper into this topic.

Start with Why: Simon Sinek

I had the chance to hear Simon Sinek at a Leadership Summit last year. He’s smart, articulate and calmingly entertaining. This book makes you think about “why” we do/make/create anything and how those people and companies with strong “Why’s” do so much better than those without. Example after example of stories of companies that flourish with strong “why’s” like Apple and those that did not like Tevo. To be successful in your company, personal business and gain employee loyalty requires a strong “why”. People buy and follow because “why” you do what you do. Excellent book. Be Your Best, Refresh Your Mind: How To Avoid Burn Out

We all need to relax at some point.

Americans take life at such an extremely fast pace. This isn’t truly realized until you visit another country and experience life in another culture. The pace slows down, the tension fades away and you finally ease in and relax. You might even whisper, “Life is so much slower here. No one is in a hurry.” For those control type A’s it may take a few days to completely relax. Unplug from your computer and phone, stop reaching for the social media, emails, and calendar that usually take up your time and life.

In our world, we have to meet deadlines, take care of our homes and family plus be leaders in our jobs. We have to schedule every hour of our day in Outlook. We are forced to schedule the time to read, work out, meditate, relax, or else we will never find time for it.  The one thing we count on is the fast pace our minds have been able to keep up, make decisions and stay in the game. BUT let me warn you. There needs to be an extended time to relax and unplug at least once a year, if not more. I know, I know, most of us have not taken a REAL vacation in years.

As we watch our children grow up it will hit us in the face that we need to make more memories together.

You never think back on your year and reminisce about weeks of great meetings and stressful nights. You remember that trip with the kids over spring break. How you enjoyed watching your children laugh and experience new things. Before we know it life is going to slip by, we will be left regretting all those times we should have taken to experience what’s really important.

Hitting that deadline, being in the game and on top is always a thrill and we live for the win. However, if keep up this pace without making time for family and self-care, in the end, it will be for nothing. The only reason we are here is to make memories, it’s the only thing we will have to take with us.

Make the most of them.

Remember you are at your best when you practice self-care and take time to rejuvenate your body, mind, and spirit. There have been studies that prove vacations lead to longer careers, more productive time spent at work and better attitudes in stressful situations. Take time daily to relax and meditate. The Miracle Morning – Rise and Shine – The Miracle Morning – Hal Elrod is a great place to start.  Then plan your next vacation. Save up for a week with your family. Most of us are NOT planners but start adulting and plan your next vacation NOW.

When you get home from relaxing, take a day to get ready for Monday, with renewed energy, brighter attitudes, and new ideas.  Then think about your next adventure. Find a photo of it and put it on your vision broad. It will give you something to look forward to, a new goal to achieve and wonderful new memories to make.

Hope & Faith Fitness Tips for the Books, Beauty and Business Babes!

We all tend to over complicate this health and fitness thing and with the internet, we are inundated with info on what to do and what not do. Here are my 10 best tips for the babes looking to improve their health:

1.  Start small!  You didn’t get to your current state of health overnight and you’re not going to reach your ultimate goal overnight either. Baby steps are THE way to go to achieve lasting results.

2.  Sleep is paramount. Aim for at least 7 hours.

3.  Water is your best friend. Don’t stress about the ounces consumed.  If your urine is clear to pale yellow you should be good.

4.  Try to eat as many whole foods as possible.

5.  Do something you enjoy!

6.  Practice moderation, not deprivation.

7.  Schedule your workouts. Look for pockets of time you can squeeze in a 10 minute session. It makes a difference!

8.  Plan your day to the best of your ability but be able to roll with changes too.

9.  Write down your goals/intentions with pen and paper (not your phone!).

10.  Finally, give yourself some grace. A healthy lifestyle is about balance, not all or nothing. You WILL have great days and not so great days. It’s OKAY!! You pick right back up and keep going. ️

Southern Charm and Etiquette.

This was an easy book to listen to as Reese reads it herself. She is about as southern as you get. Her book Whiskey in a Teacup reminds me of the value of traditions, family time, manners and teaching our children how to have conversations and respect for each other. You will find yourself reflecting on your own childhood traditions and, if you are like me, sad that you don’t do more.

She offers family games, recipes, and stories that her southern family experienced in their community. Simple things like the art of getting dressed!!! Workout clothes are for working out and sweating…..then you change! I love this!  You will enjoy this book…plus some great southern recipes!
